Recording Tracks

Overland Navigator can record your GPS track as you travel, creating a detailed log of your journey.

Starting a Recording

  1. Tap the Tracks tab at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Tap the Record button (red circle).
  3. A recording indicator will appear on the map screen.
Tip: You can continue recording in the background while your screen is locked. Make sure background location is enabled in your device settings.

Pausing and Resuming

  • Tap the Pause button to temporarily pause recording (e.g. during a stop).
  • Tap Resume to continue recording.

Stopping a Recording

After you stop a GPS recording, the app prompts you to fill in some details before it’s saved. This helps you remember which track is which later on.

Fields

Name of the track/route/road - give it a clear, useful name.

Where is this route? - pick the region from the list.

How long did this route take? - time in hours.

How long is this route? - distance in km (pre-filled from your GPS data if it could be calculated).

How hard is this route? - choose a difficulty/grade level.

Route direction - one way or there and back.

How much bush rash is there? - rate the vegetation overhang from none to severe.

Share with the community - leave this off to keep the recording private in My Navigator. Turn it on if you want to submit the route for review so it can be considered for the public map.

Saving or discarding

Tap the checkmark to submit your recording with the details you’ve filled in.

Tap the X if you want to discard it. You’ll get a confirmation prompt - your route won’t be saved if you confirm.

Once submitted, your recording appears in the My tracks section of My Navigator.

Sharing routes

Recorded routes stay private by default.

If you turn on Share with the community before saving, the route is submitted for review by the Overland Navigator team. It will not appear on the public map until it has been checked and approved.
